'Wolves Can't Overcome Early Runs

The SeaWolves could not make it back-to-back wins as they dropped the middle game of a three-game series to the Trenton Thunder 6-4.

Trenton jumped ahead in the first inning against Erie starter Warwick Saupold. Jake Cave led off with a triple and Aaron Judge walked putting runners on the corners. Greg Bird lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Cave for a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Mark Payton and Ali Castillo each singled home runs for a 3-0 lead.

Erie cut into the lead in the top of the second against Trenton starter Caleb Smith. Dean Green led off and was hit by a pitch. Tony Thomas followed with a walk putting two on for Jason Krizan. Krizan grounded out to first, advancing the runners into scoring position. Green and Thomas scored on a Wade Gaynor infield single, cutting the Trenton lead down to a run at 3-2.

The Thudner would go back up by three runs in the bottom of the second. Cito Culver and Cave each singled to start the inning. With one out, Bird singled home Culver and on an error, Cave also scored to make it 5-2.

In the fifth, the 'Wolves made it a two-run game. Austin Green led off with a double and he scored on a Josh Prince single making it 5-3.

Erie once again made it a one-run game in the seventh when Prince blasted a solo home run to left making it 5-4.

Trenton quickly went back ahead by two in the bottom of the seventh when Bird led off and belted a solo home run off of reliever Whit Mayberry making it 6-4. Erie would get no closer.

Saupold (1-4) took the loss allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts in six innings.

Smith (4-3) earned the win, his second against Erie. Smith allowed three runs on six hits in 5.1 innings.
