Trenton Thunder News Release
Greg Bird drove in two in the first two innings and blasted a solo home run in the seventh to push the Thunder (34-25) to a 6-4 win over the Erie SeaWolves (20-36) on Wednesday night at ARM & HAMMER Park.
Bird drove home Jake Cave with a sacrifice fly to score the first of three runs for the Thunder in the bottom of the first inning. Mark Payton and Ali Castillo also drove in runs with first inning singles.
The SeaWolves grabbed two of their own in the top of the second off Caleb Smith when Erie 3B Wade Gaynor reached on an infield single with two men out.
However, the one-run lead for the Thunder quickly expanded in the bottom of the second when Bird drove Cito Culver home with a base hit. Bird hustled to second after Culver scored and Austin Green's throwing error allowed Cave to score as the Thunder took a 5-2 lead.
From there, Smith settled in and pitched into the sixth inning. The left-hander struck out six and grabbed his fourth win of the season. James Pazos followed Smith with 2.2 innings, surrendering only a solo home run to Josh Prince in the top of the seventh.
Bird, who finished 2-for-3, hit his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh. Bird's homer was his first since his activation from the disabled list and the first baseman has now reached in 27-of-30 games played this season.
Jake Cave extended his hitting streak to five games, during which he is batting 9-for-21 (.429) with four multi-hit games. Mark Payton and Danny Oh also recorded multi-hit games in the win.
Your Thunder will look to take the series from Erie on Thursday night. The Thunder will send RHP Kyle Haynes (0-3, 1.82), Erie will send RHP Chad Green (2-7, 5.22). Thursday night features post-game fireworks set to the music of Jersey Boys! It's also Thirsty Thursday where fans can get $2 Bud and Bud Light drafts until the fifth inning.
