May 7, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Erie SeaWolves News Release
The 'Wolves struck first against Altoona starter Justin Wilson in the top of the first inning. With one out, Andy Dirks singled but was retired at second when Wilkin Ramirez reached on a fielder's choice. Cesar Nicolas then connected on an opposite-field double down the right field line, scoring Ramirez for a 1-0 lead.
The one run would prove to be just plenty for the SeaWolves pitching staff, paced by starter Duane Below who was making his sixth start of the season. Below allowed just four base runners through his first five innings of work.
Below would then work into the sixth inning for the first time this season. With one out, he allowed a single to Josh Harrison and on a fielder's choice off the bat of Gorkys Hernadnez, an error allowed both runners to reach safely. Below then handed the ball off to Ramon Garcia. Garcia struck out Jordy Mercer for the second out before giving up a two-out single to Matt Hague. With the bases loaded, Garcia induced a groundout off the bat of Jim Negrych to end the inning.
The SeaWolves would tack on a pair of runs in the ninth inning. Former SeaWolf Corey Hamman worked two scoreless innings and retired the first hitter in the ninth before hitting Michael Bertram with one out. After a Max St. Pierre strikeout, Cale Iorg walked to put two on for Shawn Roof. Altoona went to the bullpen bringing in Michael Dubee. Dubee walked Roof to load the bases. Josh Burris then sent a single through the left side, scoring both Bertram and Iorg, giving the 'Wolves a 3-0 lead.
Brooks Brown worked a scoreless eighth and came out to work in the ninth. He retired Negrych on a groundout for the first out and struck out Miles Durham for the second. Alex Presley then singled and Hector Gimenez walked to bring the tying run to the plate. Pinch hitter Chris Watts then struck out to end the game. Brown picked up his second save.
Below (2-3) picked up his second win in his last three starts going a season-high 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Below has now worked at least five innings in each of his last three starts. After starting the season 0-3, he is 2-0 with a no-decision in his last three starts.
The SeaWolves have now won seven consecutive road games which is the best road winning streak in the last eight seasons.
The win takes the SeaWolves to a season-high two-games over .500 and improves their record to 6-2 against Altoona.
The two clubs play the middle game of the three-game series on Saturday evening at Blair County Ballpark...5:00 First Pitch. Righty Thad Weber (1-2, 3.38 ERA) takes the mound for the 'Wolves against RHP Tim Alderson (2-0, 5.84 ERA).
