New Britain Rock Cats News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - Portland's Ryan Kalish delivered a bases loaded double in the top of the ninth to knock in three runs and give the Sea Dogs the eventual 4-2 victory over the Rock Cats before a sellout crowd of 7,065 at New Britain Stadium on Friday night.
The Rock Cats were three outs away from recording their third-straight win when the Sea Dogs feasted on a shaky bullpen in the ninth. Santos Arias went back out on the mound for the start of the inning and retired the first batter before allowing two free passes sandwiched around a base hit that loaded the bases. Arias (0-5) forced Ray Chang to line out to third base before Kalish delivered the dagger - a two-base hit to right field that cleared the bags.
The bullpen collapse in the ninth erased a strong outing by New Britain's Tyler Robertson, who engaged in an old-fashioned pitcher's duel with the Sea Dogs Felix Doubront.
The Rock Cats took an early lead in the bottom of the first when leadoff man Ben Revere reached on a single and stole second base - his first of two on the night - with one out. Rene Tosoni struck out before Juan Portes drew a two-out walk. Rock Cats catcher Daniel Rams - fresh off a promotion from Beloit - lined a double into right field to knock in Revere for the 1-0 lead.
The lead didn't last for long, though, as the Sea Dogs answered back in the top of the second on an RBI single by Chih-Hsien Chiang.
Both Robertson and Doubront kept the other team off the board until the bottom of the fifth. Steve Singleton led off with a line drive single to left and moved to second on a fielding error. Toby Gardenhire drew a one-out walk before Revere laced a double into right field to knock in Singleton and put the Rock Cats back on top, 2-1.
Robertson finished with one run on seven hits through 6 1/3 innings. He struck out five. Doubront struck out nine Rock Cats batters in 5 2/3 innings. Both came away with the no-decisions. Eammon Portice (3-1) picked up the win in relief fort he Sea Dogs.
Bryce Cox allowed the Rock Cats to load the bases up in the bottom of the ninth, but all the runners were left stranded as he notched his fourth save.
