May 7, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Harrisburg Senators News Release
Harrisburg, PA -The Eastern League announced earlier today RHP Stephen Strasburg has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Month for April. Strasburg made his much-hyped professional debut for the Senators on April 11 at Altoona and spent the entire month of April with the Senators.
Strasburg is the first Sens player of the month since Kory Casto was named player of the month in June 2006. Strasburg was the overall number one draft choice in the 2009 draft by the Washington Nationals.
His first start was so highly anticipated that over 70 media members attended and ESPN News televised the game. Not only did he win the ballgame, but he also contributed an RBI double in the process.
Overall, he made five starts for the Senators going 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA. He struck out 27 batters and walked six in 22 innings. He struck out 23 batters in four starts in April, which was second in the league. He had the lowest ERA for a starter in April (0.52) and held opponents to a .115 batting average.
During one stretch, he didn't allow an earned run in 14.1 innings, and went 11 scoreless innings. His best outing came in game one of a doubleheader at Reading. He went five innings striking out six and allowing just one runner, which came on a passed ball on a strikeout. The Sens won that game 1-0 and the lone run was driven in by Strasburg with a single in the fifth inning.
Strasburg entered the season as the Nationals number one prospect and as the second best prospect in minor league baseball according to Baseball America. He was promoted to AAA Syracuse this past Tuesday, May 4th.
The Senators ten-game homestand, their longest this season, continues tonight at 7:00pm with a game against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Tickets can be purchased in person, by telephone at 717-231-4444 option 2, or via the internet through the Sens website at www.senatorsbaseball.com. The series against Richmond continues Saturday night at 7:00pm and Sunday afternoon at 2:00pm.
