Harrisburg Senators News Release
The Harrisburg Senators dropped a 5-3 decision to the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Friday night at Metro Bank Park, as the Flying Squirrels won the first game ever between the two teams. The game was played in front of an announced attendance of 4897.
Richmond (17-11) won in its first-ever game against the Senators, after moving from Norwich, Connecticut in the offseason. Starting pitcher Daryl Maday (5-0) picked up the victory, despite allowing three runs or more for the first time this season. Rafael Cova earned his eighth save for the Flying Squirrels, while starter Erik Arnesen (0-2) took the loss for the Senators.
The Sens (11-17) took an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, with Leonard Davis and Jesus Valdez driving in the runs. Davis tripled in Danny Espinosa after Espinosa had been hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and Valdez hit a sacrifice fly to score Davis. Richmond then came back with three in the top of the second off of Arnesen to take a 3-2 lead.
In the third inning, Espinosa and Michael Martinez led off the inning with a pair of singles, and then were advanced by Davis' sacrifice bunt. Valdez then grounded into a fielder's choice, and picked up his eighth RBI as Espinosa scored from third to tie the game at three. The Flying Squirrels scored the winning run in the fourth off of a throwing error, and then tacked on one more in the seventh when Thomas Neal singled home Darren Ford.
On the game, the Senators collected nine hits, with Espinosa responsible for two of them. Martinez, Davis, Valdez, Bill Rhinehart, Michael Daniel, and the pitcher Arnesen each had one hit apiece. Conor Gillaspie homered in the ball game for Richmond.
Game two of the three-game weekend series is set for Saturday night at Metro Bank Park, with a 7 PM scheduled first pitch. Left-hander Matt Chico (1-2, 3.12) is slated to pitch for the Senators, against RHP David Mixon (2-1, 2.83) of the Flying Squirrels. The game can be heard on the radio starting at 6:45 PM, on 1460 AM The Ticket and online at www.senatorsbaseball.com.
