New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Binghamton, NY- New Hampshire managed just one hit through the first seven innings, but scored seven runs in the top of the eighth inning for a 7-5 win over Binghamton on Friday night at NYSEG Stadium. The win leaves the first place Fisher Cats with a 19-9 record and a three-game lead over Binghamton and Portland in the Eastern League's Eastern Division.
Manny Mayorson doubled in two runs in the decisive frame to tie the game before a sacrifice fly by Eric Thames gave the Fisher Cats the lead at 6-5. Mayorson scored on a wild pitch for the final run. Earlier in the inning, Adam Loewen drove in a run with a single and Brian Jeroloman and Darin Mastroianni drew bases loaded walks, the second from losing pitcher Derrick Ellison (1-1).
Binghamton starter Mike Antonini retired 21 of the first 22 batters he faced, allowing only a Mastroianni single in the fourth. That hit extended Mastroianni's hit streak to a season-high 13 games.
The Mets (16-12) opened up a big early lead. Kirk Nieuwenheis led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run to put the Mets up 1-0. They added another run on doubles by Luis Hernandez and Lucas Duda off Fisher Cats starter Zach Stewart.
The Mets tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second inning to open a 5-0 lead. Nieuwenheis tripled home two runs after walks to Omir Santos and Jose Coronado. He scored on a single by Hernandez.
Stewart left after three innings, but the Fisher Cats bullpen was outstanding. B.J. LaMura, in his Fisher Cats debut, Vince Bongiovanni, Trystan Magnuson and Danny Farquhar held Binghamton scoreless over the final six innings on one hit. Bongiovanni (3-0) earned the win and Farquhar picked up his ninth save. The Fisher Cats continue on the road Saturday afternoon with the middle game of a three-game series against the Binghamton Mets at NYSEG Stadium. New Hampshire right-hander Bobby Bell (2-1, 6.12) opposes B-Mets right-hander Eddie Kunz (2-2, 6.94) in the 1:05pm game. Fisher Cats Pre-Game gets underway at 12:45pm with Bob Lipman on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.
