FORT WAYNE, IN---It has been said many times in baseball that good pitching often beats good hitting.

Such was the case at Memorial Stadium on Thursday night, as Beloit starting pitcher Mike McCardell turned in the most dominating performance by a Fort Wayne opponent this season, in leading the Snappers to a 6-1 triumph over the Wizards, in front of a crowd of 2,631 that included Midwest League President George Spelius.

The 6'5" McCardell was seemingly never in trouble during his seven-inning stint on the mound, allowing no runs on two hits, walking one, and striking out nine.

Only four Fort Wayne batters were able to safely reach base against McCardell.

They were Robert Perry (hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the first inning), Brad Chalk (who doubled with two outs in the third), and Lance Zawadzki (who singled to start the bottom of the third and walked leading off in the bottom of the seventh inning).

McCardell got all the offensive support he needed in the top of the fourth inning.

Wizard starter Jeremy McBryde retired the first 10 batters he faced before giving up a one-out single to Chris Cates.

McBryde then hit Ben Revere with a pitch, putting runners on at both first and second base.

After Deibinson Romero flied out to centerfield for the second out of the inning, Rene Laveret singled on a 3-2 pitch to drive in both Cates and Revere to give Beloit a 2-0 lead.

Run-scoring singles by Cates and Revere with one out in the top of the fifth inning against McBryde extended the Snapper advantage to 4-0.

Beloit struck again with two outs in the top of the sixth, when a double by Greg Yersich and a single off the bat of Mark Dolenc produced yet another run, making the score 5-0.

It remained 5-0 until Ozzie Lewis connected on a 1-0 pitch from Fort Wayne relief pitcher Brandon Gomes and drilled it into the tater sack in left field for his fourth home run of the season, upping their lead to 6-0.

The Wizards avoided being shut out for the ninth time in 2008, when a two-out single by Perry off Snapper reliever Blake Martin enabled Yefri Carvajal (who singled and advanced to second base on an error charged to Beloit second baseman Jeanfred Brito) to come around and score, bringing Fort Wayne to within 6-1.

That's as close as the Wizards would come, however, as they dropped to 8-13 in the second half and 45-46 overall.

McCardell (6-2) picked up the win, while McBryde (3-6) was tagged with the loss.

The three-game series is now deadlocked at a win apiece, with the rubber game set for Friday night.

Right-hander Wynn Pelzer (7-3, 3.16) will make his 15th start of the season for Fort Wayne.

The Snappers (13-7 in the second half and 49-39 for the entire season) are expected to send right hand pitcher David Bromberg (5-6, 5.42) to the mound. The game can be heard on both the radio (ESPN Radio 1380) and the Internet (www.fortwaynewizards.com), beginning with the Hupe Insurance Services Pre-Game Show at 6:40 p.m. (EDT).
