Peoria Chiefs News Release

Geneva, IL - The Peoria Chiefs and Kane County Cougars were suspended after the third inning with the Chiefs trailing 6-1 Thursday night. The game will resume Friday night at 4:00 pm and then the two teams will play a seven-inning game that will still begin at 6:30 pm. Kane County wasted little time in getting on the board against Chiefs starter Jose Pina. Pina walked the Cougars lead-off man Adam Klein and never recovered. After a groundout moved Klein to second, Todd Johnston put the Cougars on top 1-0. Larry Cobb drew a walk, and Jake Smith delivered a two-out RBI single to right for a 2-0 lead. An error by Elvis Lara on a inning-ending fielders' choice grounder gave the Cougars a 3-0 lead. Pina then walked DJ Hollingsworth and was replaced by reliever John Mueller without completing the first inning. Mueller induced a groundout from Jemile Weeks to end the first with the bases loaded. The Cougars doubled their lead in the second inning against Mueller. Klein again led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a single by Richard. After a double steal, Larry Cobb put the Cougars up 6-0 with a home run over the centerfield wall. Mueller escaped the second with back-to-back outs but the damage had been done. Peoria got on the board with their first base-runner in the third inning. With one out, newcomer Luis Flores hit his first professional home run, a rocket shot off the left-field scoreboard. Flores joined the Chiefs on Wednesday with his first two RBI and the home run cut the Cougars lead to 6-1. With the storm on the way, Mueller retired Kane County in order in the bottom of the third. The Cougars staff then pulled the tarp on the field moments before the thunderstorm hit. Heavy rains and strong winds, along with huge bolts of lightning resulted in a suspended game at 8:10 pm. The Chiefs last suspended game was also against the Cougars at O'Brien Field on May 31, 2006. The game will resume on Friday at 4:00 pm with Peoria's Elvis Lara at the plate to start the top of the fourth inning. The two teams will then play a seven-inning game at 6:30 pm. Rehabbing Cubs pitcher Scott Eyre will throw one inning during the double header on Friday. The Chiefs will send RH Audy Santana (0-4, 3.65) to the mound against Cougars LH Lance Sewell (2-1, 2.41) in game two. The games can be heard live beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45 pm online at www.peoriachiefs.com or on WOAM 1350 AM.
