Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Quad Cities River Bandits got a healthy dose of Sean Coughlin on Thursday afternoon, as the Silver Hawks' catcher homered twice and drove in seven runs to lead South Bend to a 10-2 win at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium.
Quad Cities (11-10, 44-41) scored both of their runs on solo homers, including a ninth-inning bomb by 2008 first-rounder Brett Wallace that extended his hitting streak to seven games. But in addition to the monster game from Coughlin, South Bend (14-7, 47-43) held the River Bandits without a hit through the first six innings on their way to pitching a combined three-hitter.
The Silver Hawks wasted no time jumping on River Bandits' starter Nick Additon in the bottom of the first. Jo Jo Batten led off the inning by taking a five-pitch walk, and singles by Taylor Harbin and Collin Cowgill loaded the bases with nobody out. Coughlin promptly brought everybody home, taking a 1-0 pitch and belting it past the berm and out of the ballpark to right field for a 4-0 lead.
Additon responded to the grand slam by setting down the next seven batters he faced in order, four of them by way of the strikeout. But after issuing a one-out walk to Cowgill in the third, Coughlin got him again. The slugging Silver Hawks catcher turned on a 1-1 pitch and blasted another liner deep to right, banging it off the foul poll to stretch the lead to 6-0.
Meanwhile, South Bend's Dallas Buck and Bryan Henry (2-5) combined to hold Quad Cities to just three hits. Buck, a third-round pick out of Oregon State in 2006, started and tossed 4.2 hitless innings before being removed due to a pitch count. Henry took it the rest of the way, allowing three hits - and two homers - over 4.1 frames to earn the win.
South Bend added two more runs against reliever Jared Bradford in the fifth. Derrick Walker started the rally with a one-out triple off the wall in left-center, and one pitch later Chance Wheeless ripped a groundball through the right side of a drawn-in infield for the first run of the frame. After a walk put men at first and second, Jimmy Principe pulled a double past the third baseman and Wheeless came around to score for an 8-0 advantage.
The River Bandits broke up the no-hitter and the shutout in the seventh. Nick Peoples thought he had the first Quad Cities hit of the game back in the second inning when he lined a ball off the first baseman's glove and into right field, but after originally being ruled a hit the play was changed to an error mid-game, bringing the no-hitter back into play. Peoples took matters into his own hands in the seventh, belting a leadoff homer to left - his third of the year - to make it an 8-1 ballgame.
The Silver Hawks scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh before Wallace and the River Bandits capped the scoring in the top of the ninth. Wallace, the 13th overall pick in the 2008 draft, golfed a solo homer to right to pull Quad Cities to within 10-2. His second professional homer through eight pro games also extended his hitting streak to seven games, a stretch that has seen the Arizona State product bat .360 with two homers, five extra-base hits, seven runs, and six RBI.
Additon (7-3) suffered the loss for Quad Cities, tagged for six runs on seven hits over four innings of work. Although he struck out five and walked two, all six runs against him crossed the plate on homers by Coughlin.
UP NEXT: The River Bandits are in the midst of a six-game road trip that continues on Friday in South Bend before moving to Clinton for a three-game series that begins Saturday. Quad Cities will return to Modern Woodmen Park on Wednesday, July 16, for a six-game homestand.
