Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING - The Lansing Lugnuts won their fourth straight game Thursday night by taking a 7-1 decision over the Cedar Rapids Kernels before 7,512 fans at Oldsmobile Park.
The Lugnuts broke the scoreless tie in the third inning by rallying for a run with two outs. Justin Jackson drew a walk off of Cedar Rapids starter Michael Davitt. John Tolisano's single moved Jackson to third and Jonathan Jaspe's single to right plated Jackson to make it 1-0.
Lansing scored three more in the next frame, with all the runs coming with two outs. Yohermyn Chavez delivered a two-run single and Eric Eiland followed that with an RBI single, putting Lansing up 4-0.
The run support was more than enough for Lansing's starting pitcher. Luis Perez (4-6) tossed 6 1/3 innings and allowed just one unearned run on five hits. He also struck out nine in the outing while earning his first win since June 19.
Frank Gailey got his first save by hurling the final 2 2/3 innings in the game. He allowed just one hit.
After Cedar Rapids scored their lone run in the top of the seventh, Lansing answered back with three more in the bottom of the inning to put the game away. Jaspe had an RBI single that scored Chavez and Matt Liuzza smacked a two-run double into left-center field that pushed the lead to 7-1.
Davitt (2-7) took the loss for the Kernels after allowing six runs over 6 1/3 frames. All six runs were earned to him on nine hits.
Lansing (53-38, 14-7) will go for the series sweep over Cedar Rapids (44-44, 12-8) Friday night. Marc Rzepczynski (3-3, 2.38) is scheduled to start for the Lugnuts. Esmerlin Jimenez (4-2, 3.44) will take the hill for the Kernels.
Friday is Christian Family Night at Oldsmobile Park with LAFCU fireworks following the game. First pitch is set for 7:35 p.m.
