Chiefs Back in First With 5-1 Win at Kane County

Geneva, IL - The Peoria Chiefs scored five unanswered runs in the final six innings and regained sole possession of first place with a 5-1 win over the Kane County Cougars Wednesday night. The win is their fifth straight against Kane County this season and moves the Chiefs to 13-7 on the half. After the Chiefs left a runner in scoring position in the top of the first, Kane County got on the board in their first at-bat. Michael Richard reached on an infield single and Jemile Weeks walked in his first professional plate appearance. After the duo pulled off a double steal, Todd Johnson walked to load the bases with no outs. Chiefs starter Kevin Kreier struck out Corey Brown but then gave up a deep flyout to Jake Smith as Richard scored for a 1-0 Cougars lead. Kreier then struck out Greg Dowling to end the inning with two runners in scoring position. The Chiefs left runners on base in the second and third before finally breaking through against Scott Hodsdon in the fourth. Luis Bautista led off with his second single of the game and advanced to second on an error by Weeks with Cliff Andersen safe at first. Newcomer Luis Flores singled to left, and Bautista scored to tie the game 1-1. Jake Opitz drew a walk to load the bases, and Jonathan Wyatt put the Chiefs in front 2-1 with a sacrifice fly to deep left field. The Chiefs added an insurance run in the eighth against Cougars reliever Justin Friend. With one out, Wyatt walked, stole second and moved to third on an infield single by Nate Samson. Brandon Guyer put the Chiefs up 3-1 with a sacrifice fly to left. The Chiefs added two more against Friend in the ninth to put the game out of reach. Ridling lifted a one-out double off the wall in center and scored on a single by Flores. Flores then scored on back-to-back wild pitches by Nick Walters before the Chiefs left the bases loaded. Kreier (4-2) threw five innings in which he allowed just one run on five hits to pick up the win. The right-hander, who missed his last start with lower back pain, struck out four and walked two. Jordan Latham allowed just one hit through two shutout innings while walking one and striking out two. Steve Vento picked up his 10th save of the season with two shutout innings in which he allowing an infield hit and struck out two.

Player of the Game - Luis Bautista (1B) - The reigning Midwest League Player of the Week doesn't look like he wants to give up his title as the Chiefs first baseman collected a hit in each of his first four at-bats Wednesday night. He singled in the second, fourth and fifth before doubling down the left-field line in the ninth. He finished 4-for-5 with his 17th double and a run scored

Notes... The Chiefs are 6-2 on a season-long 13-game road trip that continues through July 14... The Chiefs drew their first walk in 31 2/3 innings in the fourth and finished with five on the night... Bautista picked up his first career four-hit game and is now 21-36 (.583) on the road trip...Peoria left the bases loaded three times and left a season-high 16 runners on base...Jonathan Wyatt is the second Chiefs player to steal three bases in a game this season as Leon Johnston accomplished the feat June 6 against Clinton...The RBI in the fourth inning was the first in Luis Flores' professional career after he did not drive in a run in nine games for Boise...Vento is tied for fourth in the MWL with 10 saves...Guyer was hit by two pitches and four of the six times he has been plunked this season have been against Kane County...Chiefs starting pitchers are 5-1 in their last six decisions...Peoria is now 5-9 in the first game of a road series this season and 5-3 overall against the Cougars...The stolen bases in the first inning were the first against Kreier all season...Game two of the three-game series is Thursday at 6:30 pm...The Chiefs will send RH Jose Pina (0-0, 0.00) to the mound in against Cougars RH Scott Deal (5-3, 3.88)...The game can be heard live beginning with the pre-game show at 6:15 pm online at www.peoriachiefs.com or on WOAM 1350 AM.
