Burlington Bees News Release
Midland, MI (Jul 10, 2008) - The Burlington Bees moved to 2-0 on the current nine-game road trip after defeating Great Lakes 6-0 Thursday night at Dow Diamond. Alex Caldera threw 7.1 scoreless innings to pick up his seventh win of the season while David Lough and Todd Balduf each hit homeruns for the Bees.
The Bees scored the first run of the game in the fifth inning. Jamar Walton led the inning off with a double and moved to third on a Juan Rivera ground-out. After Zach Evangelho walked to put runners at the corners, Balduf came to the plate. He reached on a Fielder's Choice but the Loons were not able to record the out at home as Walton scored to give the Bees a 1-0 lead.
The Bees picked up some insurance in the sixth inning. Jason Taylor led the inning off with a walk and moved all the way to third on a Lough single. A wild pitch then allowed Taylor to score and moved Lough to second. Walton then hit a single, which scored Lough and gave the Bees a 3-0 lead.
The Bees were able to put the game away in the top of the ninth inning. Lough led the inning off by hitting his seventh homerun of the season. With one out and Rivera on second, Balduf hit his first homerun of the season to finish out the scoring for the Bees.
Alex Caldera got the start and was very good for the Bees giving up six hits with two strikeouts and two walks in 7.1 innings of work. Five of the six hits came in the first two innings. In the second inning, Caldera successfully worked out of a situation where the bases were loaded with one out. With the win, Caldera is now 7-6. Chris Chavez picked up his third save of the season pitching 1.1 innings allowing just one hit.
Despite not scoring a run and being outscored by six runs, Great Lakes outhit the Bees 7-6. Lough and Walton each had two hits in the game. For Walton, it was his third consecutive multiple hit game. Lough's homerun was his second homerun in the last two games.
The Bees and the Loons conclude the series Friday night at Dow Diamond. Matt Mitchell is the scheduled starter. First pitch is set for 6:05. The game can be heard on 1490 KBUR and online at www.GoBees.com.
