Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Chad Wiseman broke a 4-4 tie with 1:33 left in regulation and Jacob Josefson scored twice as the Albany Devils defeated the Sound Tigers 6-4 at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport on Tuesday. With the win, Albany improves to 18-23-0-3. The Sound Tigers fall to 19-21-3-3.
Justin DiBenedetto gave the Sound Tigers the lead midway through the first period. The second-year forward went to the net as Ty Wishart unleashed a slap shot from above the left circle and DiBenedetto deflected it past Mike McKenna. It was his third goal in as many games and it put the Sound Tigers in front 1-0 with 9:34 remaining in the first period. DiBenedetto would increase the Sound Tigers lead to two via the power play. The Mississauga, Ont. native camped out in front of McKenna and was able to push the puck past the Albany netminder to give the Sound Tigers a 2-0 lead. Albany took advantage of an Anton Klementyev turnover behind his own net, leading to Matt Anderson's wraparound that beat Koskinen to make the score 2-1 with 35 seconds remaining in the first period.
Albany drew even on a five-on-three power play goal. After Tomas Marcinko was called for a hooking penalty while on the shorthanded forecheck, the Devils won the faceoff in the offensive zone. Adam Henrique took the puck right in front of the crease and got Mikko Koskinen to drop down to the ice, allowing the Devil forward to lift the puck into the top of the net to tie the game at two. Special teams were the theme of the middle frame as referees Mark Lemelin and David Banfield combined to call eight penalties, and the Devils took the lead as a Sound Tigers power play expired. Moments after Olivier Magnan exited the box, Jacob Josefson beat Koskinen to give the Devils a 3-2 lead heading to the third.
The Sound Tigers went on the power play following a Jean-Sebastian Berube penalty at 5:50 of the final period, yet it was the Devils who would convert. Albany created a two-on-one and Josefson's one-timer gave the Devils a 4-2 lead at 6:25 of the period. However, the Sound Tigers would respond and tie the game. Micheal Haley broke through a check down the right side and fed the puck to the slot where Tomas Marcinko chipped it home to make the score 4-3 with 6:08 to go, and Jesse Joensuu knotted the score with a shot from the bottom of the right circle with 3:26 remaining in regulation. Albany would have the final say as Rob Davison's shot toward the left corner deflected off Chad Wiseman's body and past Koskinen to retake the lead 5-4 with 1:33 left. Stephen Gionta added an empty-netter with 24 seconds to go and Albany skated away with the 6-4 win.
Mikko Koskinen made 28 saves but lost his seventh consecutive game. Mike McKenna made 29 saves to earn the win for the Devils. DiBenedetto now has four goals in his last three games. Rhett Rakhshani had an assist in his first game back with the Sound Tigers after being returned by the Islanders yesterday.
The Sound Tigers return to action Friday night when they travel to Worcester to face the Sharks at DCU Center at 7:30 p.m.
