Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - Two home runs by catcher J.T. Wise complemented by 16 strikeouts from Great Lakes pitchers resulted in the Loons 5-3 win over the Lake Captains Friday night to give the team the three-game sweep.
"Wise had a big game with three hits and two home runs," Loons Manager Juan Bustabad said after the game. "And he was our MVP of the night tonight on the offensive side. Also, our pitchers were striking guys out and pitched great."
The Captains drew first blood, hitting a sacrifice-fly off the Loons left-handed starter Greg Wilborn in the top of the second inning. The run was Wilborn's first earned run allowed at Dow Diamond since he joined the club on 7/30, after 21 scoreless innings at home. Despite the hiccup, Wilborn had six strikeouts before the Loons took the lead in the bottom of three.
A pair of leadoff walks set the stage for Great Lakes' three-run inning. Shortstop Christian Lara hit into a groundball fielder's choice that scored Chris Jacobs and tied the game. Then with a runner on second, Wise took his first official at-bat and went yard, homering deep to right-center field.
On the other side of the ball, Wilborn continued on to total 10 strikeouts for the night, but was touched again in the fifth by Adam Abraham, who hit a two-run double to left field that tied the game.
The Loons, led offensively by Wise, recaptured the lead with his second two-run shot of the night, this one to left-center. Wise finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs, four RBI and one walk. He finishes the series 5-for-9 with three runs and five RBI.
Five runs were all the Loons needed as relievers Ji-Mo Lee and Steve Ames each pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game. Lee (1-0, 3.00) picked up the win, limiting Lake County to one hit with one strikeout; while Ames notched his 15th save of the season with five strikeouts to no walks. The Loons finished one strikeout shy of their single-game season high of 17 set on 6/26.
The Loons begin their final series of the regular season Saturday against the Bowling Green Hot Rods. Starting on the bump for the Loons is RHP Josh Wall (8-7, 4.15) against the Hot Rods RHP Merrill Kelly (0-0, 4.97). Dow Diamond presents another Fireworks Loontacular Saturday night, powered by Dow Corning. Preceding fireworks is MBS Ball Launch, where fans can throw $1 tennis balls at a target on the field for a chance to win a $400 voucher from MBS Airport.
The Great Lakes Loons are a fourth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
