Bees drop see-saw affair in Cedar Rapids

Burlington Bees News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - Hilton Richardson's first homer since May 30 tied Friday night's game at five in the seventh, but it was not quite enough to avoid the series sweep at the hands of the Cedar Rapids Kernels by a score of 6-5.
The Richardson blast, his fifth of the season, came just a half inning after the Kernels took their second of three leads on a pair of Bees defensive miscues. With Justin Bass on third and two outs in the inning, Carlos Ramirez lofted what appeared to be a routine fly ball to left field. Julio Aparicio took a bad initial route, and slipped and fell as he attempted to readjust his course. The ball fell in and bounded toward the fence, allowing the catcher to race around for a triple. Just moments later, Ramirez came home when a Chas Byrne (L, 0-1) offering kicked off of Ben Theriot's shin guard for a passed ball.
Another triple was responsible for the Bees' undoing in the bottom of the eighth. Bass led off the frame with his second three-bagger of the night and crossed the plate a batter later on Terrell Alliman's line single through the left side. Johnny Hellweg (S, 16) worked around a one-out walk to Richardson to lock down the save.
The Bees' biggest offensive inning came in the fourth, as the visiting club battled back from a three-run deficit with six straight baserunners to open the inning against Cedar Rapids lefty Stephen Locke. Theriot's double plated the first run, and Jake Kuebler, Deivy Batista, and Fernando Cruz followed with run-scoring hits of their own to give Burlington a 4-3 advantage.
Theriot led the offense with three hits, and Cruz and Batista each chipped in with multi-hit games of their own.
The Bees return home on Saturday night to open up a three-game season-concluding series against the Clinton LumberKings. The first game gets under way at 6:30, with gates opening at 5:30 on Friends and Family Night. Log on to GoBees.com for more details on the series and to reserve your tickets right now.
