Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - In front of a Fan Appreciation Night crowd of 8,915, the Lansing Lugnuts (32-35; 68-68) completed a three-game sweep of the West Michigan Whitecaps (34-33; 60-76), 8-6, to pull within two games of the Caps for the final playoff berth with three games remaining in the season.
West Michigan's magic number remained at 2 (any combination of Whitecaps wins and Lugnuts losses equaling two would clinch the playoff berth for the Caps).
The Lugs finish the season with a three-game series at Lake County while West Michigan travels to Fort Wayne to play a three-game series.
In the midst of driving rain and vicious wind, the Lugnuts scored seven unanswered runs between the fifth and sixth innings to turn around a 5-1 deficit.
Whitecaps reliever Zach Samuels (3-1) bore the brunt of the damage, serving up four runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings to suffer the loss.
Matt Wright (5-2) earned the victory for Lansing, pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
The Whitecaps threatened late, loading the bases in the eighth inning against Danny Barnes with two outs. Casey Beck entered and walked Corey Jones to force in a run, but struck out Wade Gaynor to end the threat.
Beck pitched the ninth inning in scoreless fashion to record his fifth save.
Five different Lugnuts collected a pair of hits in the win, with K.C. Hobson and Randy Schwartz notching a pair of RBIs apiece. Leadoff hitter Oliver Dominguez drew three walks of seven Lugnuts walks in the game.
The Lugs open the season's final series on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Classic Park, sending right-hander Matt Fields (5-7, 3.76) to the mound against Lake County Captains right-hander Jason Knapp (1-0, 2.19).
