Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio - Bowling Green pitchers Albert Suarez and Tyree Hayes combined to allow just three hits as the Hot Rods defeated the Dayton Dragons 7-1 on Friday night before a crowd of 8,520 at Fifth Third Field. The Hot Rods earned a sweep of the three-game series.
Bowling Green broke open a 3-1 game with four runs in the eighth inning against Dragons reliever Jamie Walczak, keyed by a three-run home run by Kyle Spraker with two outs. It was Spraker's fourth of the year.
Dayton starting pitcher Clayton Shunick (3-2) settled down after a rough first inning, but suffered the loss. Shunick lasted six innings, allowing five hits and two runs with three walks and three strikeouts. Both runs against Shunick came in the first.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Dayton put together its first rally of the night. Mark Fleury singled with one out and David Vidal walked. Hayes then uncorked a pair of wild pitches that brought Fleury around to score and moved Vidal to third to make it 3-1. But Josh Garton struck out and after Dominic D'Anna walked, Chase Weems flied out to right to end the inning. Bowling Green then took a commanding lead with four runs in the eighth.
Suarez (2-5) was the starter and winner for the Hot Rods. He allowed just one hit in five innings, a fifth inning single to center by Garton, while walking two and striking out four. Hayes earned his second save by working the final four innings.
The Dragons (21-45, 51-84) host the South Bend Silver Hawks on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field in the first game of a season-ending three-game series. Tim Crabbe (3-7, 4.34) will start for Dayton against South Bend's Adam Worthington (5-6, 5.19).
