OSHKOSH, Wis - The Wisconsin Herd (29-9), the NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, collected a 133-128 victory over the Delaware Blue Coats (19-17) on Tuesday night inside Menominee Nation Arena.
Six Herd players scored in double figures, including four of the five Wisconsin starters. For the fourth straight game, Frank Mason led all Herd players in scoring and tallied 28 points, four rebounds and six assists. D.J. Wilson, who appeared in his second game while on assignment, totaled 19 points, seven rebounds and two blocks, while Shannon Bogues recorded 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Jemerrio Jones posted a stat line of 16 points, 14 rebounds, eight assists and two steals, and Justin Patton registered 16 points and six rebounds in his second game with the Herd. Cameron Reynolds pitched in with 11 points.
Marial Shayok led all scorers and poured in a game-high 33 points and added 14 rebounds and seven assists. Former Wisconsin Herd player, Xavier Munford notched 25 points and five assists off the bench, while Justin Robinson had 18 points. Zhaire Smith, who was assigned to Delaware by the Philadelphia 76ers, collected 13 points and Terry Harris, brother of Tobias Harris, added 12 points.
Delaware tallied the first two baskets of the game, but Wisconsin responded by scoring seven straight points on buckets by Wilson, Reynolds and Mason. With the game tied at seven, the Blue Coats used a 7-0 run and forged ahead 14-7. Delaware forced a prompt Herd timeout at the 5:40 mark after taking a double-digit lead on a Robinson layup. Facing its largest deficit of the evening, Wisconsin rattled off seven straight points and made it a one possession game. The Herd pulled to within two and with 1:36 left to play in the quarter, Wisconsin took the lead on a three by Patton. The two teams exchanged baskets over the final 90 seconds, but it was the Herd who punctuated the quarter by scoring the final four points. For the period, both squads shot 46%, but it was Wisconsin who led 33-30 at the end of the opening 12 minutes.
Wilson extended the Herd's lead to five after collecting the first bucket of the second quarter. In the first four minutes of the period, Wisconsin led by five on multiple occasions, but with 7:41 left in the frame, the Blue Coats recaptured a 44-42 advantage. Delaware led by as many as six points in the stanza, but with back-to-back free throws by Reynolds and Jones, the Herd grabbed a 64-61 lead with 1:13 on the clock. To cap the half, Wilson scored on a slam dunk off a nice feed from Mason. The Herd scored 37 points in the second period but managed to only outscore Delaware by one. The Blue Coats shot 53% in the first half but is was Wisconsin who led 70-66 at the intermission.
In similar fashion to the second quarter, Wisconsin recorded the first points of the third period as Reynolds scored on a floater in the lane. Halfway through the frame, the Herd went ahead 85-78 as Jones and Hogg scored on consecutive possessions. Moments later, Wisconsin captured its largest lead of the night at nine as Jones and Brandon Randolph each made a three-pointer. Mason came to life in the frame and scored a team-high 11 points, which included the final basket of the third period. Wisconsin totaled its best quarter of the game as the team scored 40 points and shot a blistering 58% from the field. Delaware poured in 14 of its 20 field goal attempts, but for the third straight quarter the Herd outpaced the Blue Coats and led 110-104.
To begin the fourth quarter, Shayok knocked in a three-point shot, which sliced the Wisconsin lead to three. Delaware inched closer and by the 9:31 mark, the Blue Coats pulled to within two on a long ball by Robinson. With just over five minutes to play in the game, Delaware tied the contest at 120 on a three by Smith. The tie didn't last long as Hogg answered with a three of his own on the ensuing possession. At the 3:01 mark, the Blue Coats stormed back in front as Shayok collected his 31st point on a layup. Despite Delaware taking a late lead, Wisconsin went in front for good as Wilson connected on a turnaround hook shot. The Herd concluded the game by soring 10 of the final 12 points, and as a result, Wisconsin won its league-leading 29th game, 133-128.
The Herd is now 2-0 against the Blue Coats this season and 5-2 all-time. The 133 points on Tuesday marked the ninth time Wisconsin has scored 130 points or more in a game this season. With the win, the Herd now own a 1.5-game over the Maine Red Claws for the top spot in the Eastern Conference.
Wisconsin will square off against Delaware for the final time on Thursday night. Tip-off inside Menominee Nation Arena is set for 7PM, and the game can be found on MYNEW32.
