Grand Rapids Drive News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The Grand Rapids Drive (24-15) used a strong second half to earn an easy 116-83 victory over Windy City (15-22) on Tuesday morning in front of more than 3,000 West Michigan students that came out to cheer their team to victory.
Leading the charge for the Drive was second-year forward Todd Withers who finished with a career-high 30 points to lead Grand Rapids to their third straight win. Big man Adam Woodbury, again getting the start due to Donta Hall's 10-day call-up with the Pistons, was a force in the paint as he grabbed 19 rebounds to go with 9 points and 5 assists. Today's other starters all finished in double figures as Craig Sword finished with 15 points and 8 rebounds, Louis King put up 14 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 4 steals and Jordan Bone ended with 13 points, 6 assists and 2 steals. Other Drive players in double figures were Dakarai Allen (13 points & 5 rebounds) and Tre'Shawn Thurman (10 points, 5 rebounds & 4 assists).
After leading by just 4 at the half, Grand Rapids used a 37-point 3rd quarter performance, starting with a 13-0 run, to pull ahead by 24 heading into the 4th. The Drive's explosive offense, coupled with their patented tough defense that allowed just 17 points for Windy City in the 3rd, all but sealed the game as they pulled away in the 4th.
The Drive's 53 total rebounds compared the Windy City's 35 allowed for second-chance points on the offensive end and stifled possessions for the Bulls. Grand Rapids was also able to out-assist the Bulls 31 to 19. The main factor in today's win for Grand Rapids, however, was their strong shooting performance as they went 50% (45-90) from the field and 37% (14-38) from beyond the arc compared to just 38% (29-77) from the field and 18% (6-34) from deep for Windy City.
The Bulls were led by Jaron Blossomgame who ended with a team-high 22 points, 8 rebounds and 4 rebounds. Justin Simon also finished with 14 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Other Bulls in double figures were Ferrakohn Hall (12 points & 4 rebounds) and Milton Doyle (11 points, 4 rebounds & 2 blocks).
The Drive will remain in Grand Rapids as they get ready to host the Lakeland Magic this Saturday night for Ben Wallace Bobblehead Night. Windy City will head south to Greensboro when they play the Swarm on Friday night. Tip-off for both games is 7pm.
