Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks (25-21-2-0) wrapped up three games in three days Sunday with a 4-3 win over the Tri-City Americans (20-25-2-0) at the Moda Center in front of 8,033 fans.

The Hawks opened the scoring on a goal by Caleb Jones 13:58 into the game. The play started with goaltender Adin Hill making two big saves on Michael Rasmussen at the doorstep, then the Hawks broke up ice and Skyler McKenzie fed Jones for a one-timer he wired past Americans goaltender Evan Sarthou.

The Americans got that goal back on a power play goal by Beau McCue with 44.7 seconds to go in the period to even it at 1-1 heading into the second.

Portland regained a lead 2:52 into the second on a power play when Blake Heinrich wired a shot past Sarthou to give the Hawks a 2- 1 lead. The Americans tied it once again at 14:13 when Jordan Topping scored shorthanded to even it at 2-2.

The Hawks took another lead 1:58 into the third while shorthanded when Dominic Turgeon stole the puck at the Portland blueline, raced down the ice and beat Sarthou for a 3-2 lead. But 1:22 later on the same penalty, Topping scored his second of the night to make it 3-3.

Later in the period at 10:53, Alex Schoenborn gathered the puck in front of the net, and found a narrow opening to give the Hawks their fourth lead of the game, 4-3.

From there the Hawks shut down the Americans, not allowing them to tie the game for a fourth time as they finished with the 4-3 win.

The Hawks will head north to British Columbia to take on the Kelowna Rockets Friday at 7 p.m. and the Kamloops Blazers Saturday at 7 p.m.
