Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

The Edmonton Oil Kings delivered a shutout to Everett Friday night and had the favour returned on them Sunday by Lethbridge. The Hurricanes netminder Stuart Skinner stopped 34 shots for his third shutout of the year leading his team to a 3-0 win at the Enmax Centre.

The 'Canes are the Western Hockey League's top team with a 36-12-0-0 record for 72 points. Coming off the heels of a fantastic defensive effort against the Silvertips, the Oil Kings played very well at even strength but a couple of powerplay goals burned them and resulted in only the second time they've been shut out this season. The last time was back on October 28 in Prince Albert.

Giorgio Estephan got Lethbridge on the board 1:17 into the game when he put his 27th past Payton Lee on the powerplay after Brayden Gorda was called for an early tripping minor.

Kord Pankewicz made it 2-0 for the Hurricanes in the second when he scored on the powerplay with Edmonton serving a too many men bench minor.

The Oil Kings had a chance to swing the momentum in the third when Brandon Baddock broke in on a breakaway shorthanded but narrowly missed the net with a quick shot. The captain had another glorious chance with four minutes left in the game but Skinner stopped him point blank.

Egor Babenko iced it for the Hurricanes scoring an empty net goal with just over three minutes left in the game.

Edmonton collected eight penalties for 16 minutes and went 4/6 on the PK in the loss. Their powerplay also wasn't clicking tonight going 0/5 after having scored PP goals in each of the last two games.

Goaltender Payton Lee, who came into tonight's game with a 5-2 record, 1.81 GAA and .933 save percentage since the holiday break, stopped 18 of 20 shots he faced.

Up next for the Oil Kings is a home game vs Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday. Game time is 7pm at Rexall Place.
