Portland Winterhawks News Release

Alex Schoenborn had a hat trick as the Portland Winterhawks (24-21-2-0) earned a 5-2 win in Seattle Saturday over the Thunderbirds (26-17-3-0).

The hat trick was the first of Schoenborn's career, and gave him 17 goals on the season, just one shy of his career-high, set in 2013-14. His 36 points this season has tied his career mark in that category as well.

Seattle's Scott Eansor scored the opening goal of the game on a power play with just under a minute to go in the first to make it 1-0. It was Seattle's teddy bear toss game, leading to a delay to clean up the bears.

The Thunderbirds scored with a man advantage again at the 7:45 mark of the second on a goal by Keegan Kolesar to go ahead 2-0, but that would end up being it for their offense.

Portland got on the board at 11:34 of the second when Schoenborn deflected a point shot by Keoni Texeira past netminder Landon Bow to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Hawks then tied the game at the 17:36 mark when a rebound popped out to Rodrigo Abols in the slot, and he banged it in to make it 2-2 heading into the third.

From there, Schoenborn had a terrific third period to lead the Hawks to the victory. First, he scored a highlight reel goal at the 6:02 mark when he had a shot stopped by Bow, but the puck bounced back in front of the net. Schoenborn fell onto his stomach in traffic, but stayed with the play and knocked in the rebound from the ice with one hand on his stick to give Portland a 3-2 lead.

Then at the 12:42 mark with Portland on a power play, Schoenborn struck again when he stationed himself in front of Bow and dug out a rebound to complete the hat trick and extend Portland's advantage to 4-2.

Dominic Turgeon added a late empty net goal to give the Hawks a 5-2 victory.

Adin Hill was outstanding in net for Portland, earning the win with 39 saves on 41 shots. Bow allowed four goals on 35 shots, with the Hawks adding one into the empty net.

The Hawks close out three games in three days tomorrow when they host the Tri-City Americans at 5 p.m. in the Moda Center.
