Portland, OR - The Tri-City Americans (14-19-2-0, 30 pts) played a solid game against the Portland Winterhawks (17-16-1-0, 35 pts), but Caleb Jones scored on a penalty shot in overtime, as the Americans fell 5-4 in front of 10,349 at the Moda Center on Sunday Night.
Portland scored first midway through the first period, as Alex Schoenborn redirected a shot into the net on the power play for a 1-0 lead. A minute later, the Americans took the lead, as Jeff Rayman fired a slap shot from the left point through traffic and into twine for a 2-1 advantage. With less than a minute left in the first, the Winterhawks tied the game, with Rihards Bukarts picking up a loose puck in front of the Americans' net and slipped it into the goal, evening the game at two after the first period.
Early in the second, Tri-City took the lead once again, as Morgan Geekie redirected a Kurtis Rutledge shot into the net for a 3-2 lead. Tyler Sandhu scored a goal a few minutes later to push the advantage to 4-2 Americans. In overtime, Dylan Coghlan took down Caleb Jones on his way to the net and was awarded a penalty shot. Jones was able to tuck the puck past the right pad of Evan Sarthou to help Portland earn the victory.
