Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB. - Sixteen finalists, including four members of the Brandon Wheat Kings' organization, have been nominated for the 58th Annual Brandon Sun H.L. (Krug) Crawford Memorial Award.

Among the nominees for the award, emblematic of sporting excellence in southwestern Manitoba, is Brandon General Manager and Head Coach Kelly McCrmmon, defenceman Ivran Provorov and forwards Tim McGauley and Nolan Patrick.

A former winner of the award, McCrimmon led the Wheat Kings to last year's Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy that goes to the Western Hockey League's Regular Season Champion. The club's winningest coach was also named the WHL's Executive of the Year.

At the age of 16, Patrick was named the WHL's Top Rookie after scoring 56 points in 55 games. His 30 goals were the most among all first year players in 2015-16. As well, he helped Team Canada capture the Gold Medal at last summer's Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup in the Czech Republic.

An 18-year old from Yaroslavl, who helped Russia capture a Silver Medal at last year's World Junior Hockey Championship, Provorov enjoyed a banner rookie year in the WHL. After scoring eleven goals and 61 points during the regular season, he was chosen by the Philadelphia Flyers seventh overall in the National Hockey League Draft.

A Washington Capitals' prospect, McGauley enjoyed a breakout season with the Wheat Kings in 2015-16. Not only did he finish third in league scoring with 42 goals and 105 points, he was chosen the Eastern Conference Player of the Year.

Both McGauley and Provorov were also chosen to the WHL's Eastern Conference First All Star Team last season.

Patrick, McGauley and the Wheat Kings host their first post-Christmas game of the season Sunday afternoon at 4pm against the visiting Regina Pats. Provorov meanwhile is with Team Russia at the World Junior Hockey Championship while McCrimmon is serving as an assistant coach with Team Canada.

The other finalists include hockey players Brad Bowles and Tanner Jago, curling's Braden Calvert, gymnast Isabela Onyshko, golfer Danny Peaslee, Birtle Tyler Wilson for archery, trapshooter Pat Lamont, Brandon University volleyball coach Grant Wilson, volleyball stars Nikala Majewski, Donata Huebert and Sebastien Steigmeier. Also nominated was tri-sport star Amy Toroduk of Neepawa for his excellence in figure skating, softball and track and field.

This year's winner will be announced in the January 2nd edition of the Brandon Sun.
