Oil Kings Can't Complete Comeback, Lose 5-4 in Overtime to Rebels

December 27, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

The Edmonton Oil Kings returned from the holiday break and traveled south to take on the Red Deer Rebels on Sunday night. The Oil Kings headed into the break with a win over the Kootenay Ice and were looking to keep the momentum going, but were unable to complete a comeback and dropped the eventual 5-4 decision in overtime.

The Oil Kings (14-19-4-0) got into some trouble early when the Rebels (24-12-0-0) got on the board three times in the opening frame. Ivan Nikolishin netted two and Rebel newcomer Jake DeBrusk got his 10th on the season and first as a Rebel in his first appearance with his new team. Anatolli Elizarov got the Oil Kings on the board with his first WHL goal, but the Oil Kings trailed 3-1 after twenty.

The middle frame saw the offence continue. The Rebels opened the scoring with Brandon Hagel giving the Rebels a three-goal cushion minutes into the 2nd period. But Edmonton was able to make a game of it when Lane Bauer netted one on the powerplay. Kobe Mohr followed up five minutes later with a tally of his own to make it 4-3 and put the Oil Kings right back in the game heading into the final frame.

The final twenty was quiet until Oil Kings defenceman Dysin Mayo, who recently signed an entry-level contract with the Arizona Coyotoes, knotted things up at 4-4 with just under five minutes remaining to push things into overtime. The extra time wouldn't last long though, as Connor Bleackley managed to pot his 9th on the season just over a minute in to give the Rebels the 5-4 win.

Patrick Dea stopped 19 of 24 shots sent his way. The Oil Kings peppered Rebels goaltender Rylan Toth with 48 shots, of which he was able to stop 44 to earn the win.

The Oil Kings will be right back at it tomorrow night, Monday, December 28, as they host the Red Deer Rebels for a rematch at Rexall Place. Puck drop is 7pm MT.
