Game Story

The Pats got off to a quick start with the first three shots on goal of the game, but the Wheat Kings powered back into the game with a flurry of their own. Across the midway point of the first, both Jordan Hollett and Jordan Papirny had turned aside breakaway attempts to keep the game scoreless. Adam Brooks broke through, tucking in a Taylor Cooper rebound at the 11:32 mark. The Wheat Kings found a response as Duncan Campbell finished off a quick passing play from Connor Gutenberg and Braylon Shmyr. The goal coming at 17:11 left the teams tied 1-1 after twenty minutes.

Two goals pushed the Wheat Kings to a 3-1 advantage after the second period. A long strike from Macoy Erkamps sent Reid Duke in alone. Duke deked his way to his 20th goal of the year at 12:54. Late in the frame a Tim McGauley pass redirected to Ty Lewis off a skate. The rookie forward took advantage of the opportunity and snapped the puck to the top corner of the Pats' goal with 2:05 left in the period. The Blue and White nearly cut into the lead in the final minute, but Lane Zablocki's tipped puck rang off the post, bounced off Papirny's back and stayed out.

Needing two goals to get back into the game, the Pats found their stride quickly in the third. Just four minutes into the period, a wild bounce put Sam Steel and Lane Zablocki in on Papirny and Steel fed Zablocki on the backdoor for a powerplay goal. Just two minutes later, Adam Brooks grabbed a loose puck at the top of the crease and notched his second of the game to tie the game 3-3. The match seemed destined for overtime, but the Wheat Kings went to the powerplay late in the period. Just nine seconds into the man advantage, Macoy Erkamps was the recipient of a great setup to give Brandon a 4-3 lead with 1:11 left. Just seconds later, Duke's centering feed directed into the Pats' net off the skate of Tyler Coulter to put the hosts ahead by two. Jayce Hawryluk capped off the game with an empty netter in the 6-3 Pats loss.
