Winterhawks Earn 3-2 Win over Vancouver Giants

The Portland Winterhawks (23-20-2-0) earned a 3-2 win over the Vancouver Giants (17-24-3-2) Monday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

After a scoreless first period, the Hawks struck 6:13 into the second on a power play when Dominic Turgeon scored on a shot from the slot. They quickly added to the lead, as just 1:21 later Blake Heinrich snuck in from the point and banged in a rebound to make it 2-0.

The Giants got one back at 13:30 when Taylor Crunk deflected a point shot into the Portland net to cut the Hawks' lead to 2-1, which remained the score going into the third.

Portland regained a two-goal lead 5:47 into the third when Ryan Hughes brought the puck into the Vancouver zone and wired a shot top corner to make it 3-1. The Giants again got back within one at 13:38 of the third when Matt Barberis scored to cut Portland's lead to 3-2.

From there, the Hawks kept the Giants at bay to close out the victory.

Adin Hill earned the win in net for Portland, with 27 saves on 29 shots. Ryan Kubic made 27 saves on 30 Winterhawks shot in the loss for Vancouver.

Portland was 1-3 on the power play and a perfect 2-2 on the penalty kill.

The Hawks will be off until Friday, when they host the Seattle Thunderbirds at 7 p.m. at the Moda Center.
