
Raiders' Gardiner Named WHL Player of the Week

Calgary, AB - The Western Hockey League announced today that Prince Albert Raiders forward Reid Gardiner has been named the WHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 17th, 2016.
Gardiner recorded seven points (3g-4a) to go along with a plus-5 rating in three games to lead the Prince Albert Raiders to a record of 2-0-1-0 for the week.
On Wednesday, January 13th against the Edmonton Oil Kings, Gardiner was involved in all three Prince Albert goals as he collected a goal and two assists to lead his team to a 3-1 victory. Gardiner was named the game's first star for his efforts. On Friday, January 15th, Gardiner remained consistent on the score sheet as he recorded four points (2g-2a) to lead the Raiders to a 4-2 comeback win over the Kootenay ICE. Gardiner was once again named the game's first star. The following night, Gardiner was held scoreless but earned a plus-1 rating as the Raiders fell to the Lethbridge Hurricanes 3-2 in overtime.
The 19-year-old Humboldt, SK native has collected 64 points (29g-35a) in 45 games this season to sit tied for fourth in scoring amongst all WHL skaters. The 5-11, 195 lb forward is in his fourth WHL campaign with Prince Albert and has amassed 192 points (92g-100a) in 236 career WHL regular season contests.
The WHL has also nominated Zach Sawchenko of the Moose Jaw Warriors for the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week award. Sawchenko, a 1997-born netminder from Calgary, AB posted a record of 1-0-1-0 with a 0.99 goals against average and a .976 save percentage last week. On Wednesday, January 13th, Sawchenko was named the game's first star for his 37 save performance against the Red Deer Rebels in a 1-0 overtime loss. On Saturday, January 16th against the Brandon Wheat Kings, Sawchenko was solid as he turned aside 46 shots to guide the Moose Jaw Warriors to a 4-1 victory. Sawchenko was named the game's second star in the win.
Currently in his third season with Moose Jaw, Sawchenko has posted a 47-43-5-2 record with five shutouts in 105 career WHL regular season appearances.
