Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks scored three second period goals to break open a close game Sunday as they skated to a 7-3 win over the Everett Silvertips to finish the weekend with three wins at the Comcast Arena in Everett, running their preseason record to 3-1.
The Hawks got goals from seven different players in a balanced attack that saw them outshoot the Silvertips by a margin of 42-28 on the night.
Everett got on the board in the opening minute on a goal by Dale Hunt, but the Hawks responded with a power play goal by Chris Francis on a long range wrist shot to even the score at 1-1 after one period.
In the second, Everett again took the lead on a goal by Ryan White, but the Hawks got goals from Taylor Aronson on a wrist shot and Ty Rattie on a breakaway 90 seconds apart to gain the lead that they wouldn't relinquish. Troy Rutkowski finished the second period scoring with a wrist shot off an odd man rush to send the Hawks to the second intermission with a two goal lead.
In the third, two power play goals just over a minute apart by Joe Morrow and Oliver Gabriel extended the lead before Gasper Kopitar wrapped the scoring with a shot from the blue line. Everett got a goal from Drew McDermott to round out the scoring.
Ian Curtis went the distance in net for Portland, stopping 25 of 28 shots for the victory.
On special teams, the Hawks went 3 for 10 on the power play while killing all 11 power plays against on the night.
Next up, the Winterhawks will travel to Kennewick, WA, to take on the Tri-City Americans on Friday night at 7:05 in preseason action.
