Van de Velde's Hat Trick Paces 'Tips Past Chiefs 5-2 in Game 1

KENNEWICK, WA - Paul Van de Velde notched a hat trick and the Everett Silvertips raced past the Spokane Chiefs 5-2 in Game 1 of the Red Lion Hotels Pre-Season Tournament at the Toyota Center in Kennewick. The 'Tips will turn right around and prepare to face-off against the Lethbridge Hurricanes tomorrow in Game 2. Game time is 2:00 p.m. Meanwhile, the Chiefs will return to the Toyota Center on Saturday to square off against the host Tri-City Americans. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

Despite four power play opportunities in the first period, the Chiefs struggled to get anything past Everett starter, Kent Simpson. Meanwhile, at the 13:49 mark of the first period, Corey Tyrell got the 'Tips on the board first.

After two goals less than a minute apart, Everett quickly made it 3-0 less than six minutes into the second period. Both goals came off the stick of Van de Velde, who was assisted by Shane Harper on both goals.

The squads exchanged goals in the third period, as Van de Velde completed the hat trick at the 15:34 mark of the final period. Mike Aviani and Blake Gal registered goals for the Chiefs in the loss.
