Winston-Salem Snaps Skid against Pelicans to Even Series

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Winston-Salem snapped a six-game losing streak against Myrtle Beach, topping the first-place Pelicans 5-1 at TicketReturn.com Field on Wednesday night.
In front of a standing room only crowd of 6,599, the Dash (8-6, 38-45) jumped on top in the first inning. Jacob May crushed a leadoff homer against Myrtle Beach starter Victor Payano (3-5) to give Winston-Salem a 1-0 lead. It was May's first long ball of the season, and it hit the scoreboard in left-center field.
The Pelicans (8-5, 52-29) tied the game in the bottom of the second against Dash starter Tyler Danish, who made his return from the disabled list on Wednesday. Preston Beck led off the inning with a double and scored on Christopher Bostick's single to left field, knotting the contest at 1-1.
Winston-Salem grabbed the lead for good in the top of the fourth. Joey DeMichele extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a leadoff single. Keon Barnum followed with a base hit that moved DeMichele to third. Cleuluis Rondon, making his Dash debut after being promoted from Low-A Kannapolis earlier in the day, recorded an RBI groundout to give the Dash a 2-1 edge.
Later in the inning, Grant Buckner singled to right field. Barnum rounded third and tried to score against Preston Beck's throw, which beat Barnum to the plate but was dropped by catcher David Lyon, allowing the runner to score for a 3-1 Winston-Salem advantage.
The Dash tacked on another run in the seventh. Omar Narvaez drew a leadoff walk and advanced a base on Buckner's second hit of the contest. Narvaez later scored on Keenyn Walker's infield single, providing the visitors with a 4-1 cushion.
Winston-Salem added another run in the eighth. Jason Coats led off the inning with a double and later scored on a Barnum base hit, giving the Dash a 5-1 lead.
The Dash relief corps was tremendous after Danish exited the contest. Kyle Hansen (5-4) tossed two scoreless innings. Jose Bautista threw one and two-third innings of shutout ball, and Braulio Ortiz pitched a perfect ninth to lock up the 5-1 victory.
Winston-Salem and Myrtle Beach will face off in the rubber game of the series on Thursday night. The Dash will send right-hander J.B. Wendelken (5-6, 4.33 ERA) to the mound, while the Pelicans counter with lefty Luis Parra (6-4, 4.36 ERA).
