Zebulon, N.C. - The Carolina Mudcats bested the Lynchburg Hillcats 8-3 on Tuesday night at Five County Stadium behind four RBI from Alex Monsalve and a solid outing from Shawn Morimando. The Mudcats (7-6, 36-44) scored all eight runs with two out against the Hillcats (7-5, 41-41).

Morimando (8-2) limited the Hillcats to a run on three hits across five innings. He walked two and struck out three. The southpaw is 6-0 over his last 10 outings, including a spot start with the Akron Rubberducks, since May 13. Clayton Cook and Grant Sides combined for the final four innings.

Lucas Sims (6-6) was hit hard in the loss for Lynchburg. The right-hander allowed career-high seven runs and nine hits in four innings of work. He matched his career-high with four walks. He whiffed five hitters.

Logan Vick served as the catalyst all night long as Carolina's center fielder scored all three times he reached. He drew a walk to begin the first against Sims. Joe Sever lined a double to right and Yandy Diaz scored Vick from third on a bounder to short.

Joe Odom tied the game at one with a solo shot off Morimando in the third, but the Mudcats came right back to reclaim the advantage. After recording the first two outs, Sims surrendered three straight singles to Diaz, Jerrud Sabourin and Alex Monsalve. Monsalve's liner to center plated Diaz for a 2-1 lead.

The fourth inning proved Sims' undoing. Once again retiring the first two batters, Sims ran into trouble by allowing six straight to reach. Vick singled and moved to second on a balk. Yhoxian Medina drew a walk and and Sever singled in Vick. Now up 3-1, Diaz earned a base on balls to load them up for Sabourin. Caorlina's left fielder chopped a soft bouncer to short and beat the throw for an infield single. Medina scored and the Mudcats lead 4-1.

Monsalve delivered a staggering blow when he mashed a double to the right-center gap. David Nick attempted a diving grab, but the ball deflected off his glove. Three runs scored on the double to push the advantage to 7-1.

The Hillcats gave up a two-out, unearned run in the fifth inning. Vick, again, started the rally with a walk and a swipe of second base. A fielding error by the third baseman Kevin Ahrens on a grounder from Medina allowed Vick to score for an 8-1 lead.

Lynchburg scored two in the ninth on a bases-loaded single by Eric Garcia and a groundout by David Nick.

Carolina looks to win the series with the Hillcats on Wednesday night at Five County Stadium. Gates open at 6 p.m. and first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Mudcats will celebrate Independence Day with three nights of fireworks July 3, 4 and 5.
