
Pelicans Soar Past Dash

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (JULY 1, 2014) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, defeated the Winston Salem Dash 8-1 on Tuesday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. Andrew Faulkner dazzled on the mound, pitching seven innings, striking out three, and walking one. The Pelicans' bats came alive behind the three RBI performance from Jorge Alfaro.
The Dash (7-6, 37-45) struck first in the contest. Jason Coats drove in Joey DiMichele on an RBI single to left fielder Nick Williams giving Winston Salem the lead 1-0 after one.
The Pelicans (8-4, 52-28) answered right back in the first off of Winston Salem southpaw Jefferson Olacio. Alfaro hit a seeing-eye single to score Chris Garia from second base. The Pelicans tied the game but took the lead on the next at-bat. Preston Beck singled to right field, Alfaro crossed the plate. Myrtle Beach took the lead 2-0.
Myrtle Beach added two more runs to the lead in the second inning. Hanser Alberto plated an RBI single bringing in Chris Grayson. In the next at-bat Nick Williams doubled to deep right field, and Alberto motored around the base paths to score. The Pelicans took a 4-1 lead into the third.
The Birds extended their lead by three in the sixth inning bringing seven batters to the plate facing Winston Salem right-hander Brad Goldberg. The Birds capped off the inning with an Alfaro RBI double scoring Kevin Torres and Alberto, putting the Birds ahead 7-1.
Faulkner cruised through the Dash lineup after allowing the first run of the contest. The southpaw allowed four hits, struck out three and walked one on the night. When Faulkner exited the game, the Pelicans were ahead 7-1.
The Birds added one more run to the lead in the eighth. Williams singled in Garia from second; the Pelicans sealed the deal and won the first game of the series 8-1.
Winston Salem collected only five hits and one walk.
Faulkner (6-1) earned the win and improved to 5-0 at home. He also walked one. Olacio (0-4) lost the contest.
The Pelicans took game one of the three game series against the Dash on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. Myrtle Beach sends Victor Payano (3-4, 5.01 ERA) to the hill. The Dash starter has yet to be announced. The game can be heard live on WRNN AM 1450 ESPN Myrtle Beach, on the TuneIn Radio App, and via the MiLB First Pitch App, beginning with the Hampton Inn Pregame Show at 6:45 p.m.
The remainder of the series features post-game fireworks on Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday is a Wiener Wednesday, and Thursday is Thirsty Thursday. The game on July 3 begins at 8:05 p.m. with gates opening at 6:00 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on the CBS Sports Network.
