Dash Drop Series Opener in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (July 1, 2014) - Winston-Salem's offense sputtered against Myrtle Beach starter Andrew Faulkner in an 8-1 loss to the Pelicans at TicketReturn.com Field on Tuesday night.

Faulkner (6-1) tossed seven strong innings, allowing only one run, four hits and one walk while striking out three. The left-hander lowered his season ERA to 2.35. Cody Ege followed with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts to close out the contest.

The Dash (7-6, 37-45) plated the initial run in the top of the first inning. Joey DeMichele doubled against Faulkner to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and scored on Jason Coats' single to left field, giving Winston-Salem a 1-0 lead.

Myrtle Beach (8-4, 52-28) answered in the bottom of the first against Dash starter Jefferson Olacio (0-4). Chris Garia drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He was chased home on Jorge Alfaro's single to tie the contest, marking the first earned run that Olacio surrendered as a starter this season. Alfaro later scored on Preston Beck's base hit to right field, giving the Pelicans a 2-1 advantage.

The home team added to its lead in the second inning. Chris Grayson led off the frame with a walk and moved to second on Garia's sacrifice bunt. Hanser Alberto's single to left field plated Grayson and a double by Nick Williams scored Alberto, pushing the Myrtle Beach cushion to 4-1.

The Pelicans tacked on some insurance runs in the sixth inning against Dash reliever Brad Goldberg. Grayson started the rally with a double to left field and Kevin Torres lined a single up the middle. Alberto's two-bagger to center brought Grayson home, and Alfaro chased home two with a single to left, making it a 7-1 game.

Myrtle Beach plated one more run in the eighth inning. Garia smacked a leadoff double against Winston-Salem right-hander Zach Isler and scored on Williams base hit to right to finish off the 8-1 victory.

The Dash will try to bounce back Wednesday night against the Pelicans in the middle game of the series. Winston-Salem has yet to announce a starter for the contest, while Myrtle Beach will send lefty Victor Payano (3-4, 5.01 ERA) to the hill.
