Frederick Keys Mascot, Keyote, Being Held for Ransom

FREDERICK, MD- Keyote is being held for ransom just as the city of Frederick was back in 1864 when Confederate General Jubal Early and his troops occupied the city. Early knew Frederick was a major supply depot and in his first ransom note he demanded 500 barrels of flour, 6,000 pounds of sugar, 3,000 pounds of coffee, 20,000 pounds of bacon and 3,000 pounds of salt. His second ransom note came after he discovered residents had helped the Union troops flee the city. This made him very mad and the note demanded $200,000. Bankers gathered the necessary funds and delivered the money to Early in a basket. He wrote the city a receipt and spared it from being burned to the ground. The Frederick Keys are now asking for your help to set Keyote free. Together with the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, the story of the ransom of Frederick will be retold and fans will be asked questions throughout the game. Correct answers are the only way to ensure Keyote goes free. The city of Frederick has yet to be repaid for the ransom it paid General Early but the Keys hope fans can still come through for Keyote. Gates open at 5pm for the 6pm game against the Salem Red Sox. There will be post-game fireworks to kick off Independence Day Weekend presented by Mattress Warehouse.
