Winning Streak Snapped at Great Lakes
April 21, 2017 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. -- The TinCaps' three-game winning streak came to an end on Friday night at Dow Diamond in a 6-4 loss to the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers). Outfielders Jorge Oña and Jack Suwinski hit the first home runs of their Minor League Baseball careers, while starting pitcher Jerry Keel struck out a career-high nine batters in the losing effort.
The Loons (5-10) pounced on Keel out of the gates. The first three Great Lakes batters -- Brendon Davis, Gavin Lux, and Carlos Rincon -- each had a hit as the home team took a quick 2-0 lead.
Keel cruised from there, however. He allowed only one more hit and one walk over five innings of work.
The TinCaps (6-9) got on the board in the fourth with Oña's solo opposite-field home run to right. Fort Wayne then tied the game, 2-2, in the fifth as designated hitter Eguy Rosario and left fielder Rod Boykin executed a two-out double-steal from third base and first, respectively.
The visitors took a 3-2 lead in the sixth, as third baseman Hudson Potts mashed an RBI double to plate Oña, who had reached first on an error.
Great Lakes equalized in the home sixth.
Suwinski's solo homer in the seventh off Patrick Deuester (W) gave the TinCaps a 4-3 advantage. But again the lead didn't last long.
Will Stillman (L), who relieved Keel in the sixth, walked two and hit a batter to load the bases. Mark Zimmerman entered and promptly hit a batter and walked a batter to give the Loons a 5-4 lead without a hit. Great Lakes added an insurance run in the eighth.
Thanks to a Loons error and a Boykin double, the TinCaps had the tying runs in scoring position with two outs in the ninth, but Parker Curry (S) struck out Suwinski to end the game.
