Clinton LumberKings News Release
DAVENPORT, IA- The Clinton LumberKings dropped game one of a seven-game road trip to the Quad Cities River Bandits 8-2 at Modern Woodman Park on Thursday night. The River Bandits (8-6) added to their impressive home run total with two more long flies to give them 14 in their last four games.
The LumberKings (6-8) scored first. In the top of the second inning, Luis Rengifo doubled off the wall in right and moved to third on his second steal of the year. The River Bandits brought their infield in with their starter Carson LaRue facing Clinton catcher Yojhan Quevedo. On the third pitch of the at-bat Quevedo flipped an RBI single to left for an early 1-0 Clinton lead.
LaRue (1-0) would not allow another run to score in his five-inning outing. The righty struck out four and walked two to earn his first win of the season.
The River Bandits backed their starter with offense that came in bunches. In the bottom of the second inning, LumberKings starter, Tim Viehoff pitched himself into trouble by allowing the first five men to reach against him. Chuckie Robinson had the big hit in the inning for Quad Cities, doubling to left for two runs. Two batters later,
Marcos Alomnte singled home the third and final run of the inning.
Vuehoff (0-1) could have had a worse second inning if it was not for a double play on pick off from Quevdo. With runners at first and third and nobody out, Quevedo threw to first for the first out on a pickoff. While the rundown was concluding the runner at third, Daz Cameron, began to wonder off the bag at third and was tagged out when the shortstop Rayder Ascanio threw to third following the first out of the play.
The River Bandits added to their lead with two-runs in the fifth. Then broke out for three more runs in the eighth on two home runs. Stephen Wrenn had the first homer of the inning, a two-run shot to left, and Jake Rogers hit the second of the inning, a solo homer to right center.
Quevedo drove home both of Clinton's runs adding an RBI single with two-out in the ninth inning.
The game had the first delay of the 2017 season. In the bottom of the sixth, an 18-minute delay ensued when a light fixture went out in left field.
The LumberKings will play game two of their four game series with the Quad Cities River Bandits Friday night. LHP Nick Wells (0-0, 6.23) will get the start for Clinton and face Quad Cities LHP Brett Adcock (0-0, 1.00). First pitch is slated for 6:35 PM with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI beginning at 6:20 PM, Erik Oas will be on the call.
