Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Rochester Red Wings took a 3-3 tie into the top of the 10th inning, ultimately falling in extra innings to the Syracuse Mets, 5-3. Rochester drew 8,364 fans Sunday afternoon, finishing the homestand with 47,815 fans filing through the turnstiles for an average attendance of 7,970 per game.
2B Ronny Mauricio got the scoring going for Syracuse with a solo home run that snuck over the right field wall to begin the afternoon. Rochester immediately responded, tying the game on the second pitch CF Derek Hill saw in the bottom of the first inning. The Detroit native launched a 107.8 MPH home run that traveled 408 feet off the new scoreboard in left-center field, extending his hitting streak to a league-leading 17 games (.373, 25-for-67) in the process.
The back and forth continued in the top of the second frame when the Mets retook the lead courtesy of an RBI single from Rochester native 3B Danny Mendick. In the top of the third inning, RF DJ Stewart extended Syracuse's lead to 3-1 with a solo home run. The Wings cut the deficit to one run in the bottom half of the inning, thanks to a walk, and an RBI single from 2B Jake Alu, who snapped an 0-for-9 skid to plate RF Cody Wilson.
The Wings would go on to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Alu collected his second hit and RBI of the game on a double down the right field line to score Hill. Pitching dominated until the 10th, when Mets plated two in the top half of the inning, reclaiming the lead. The Wings were unable to rally in the home half, and dropped their second-straight game, 5-3.
RHP Jose Urena made his sixth start of the year with the Red Wings, turning in his longest start of the season. The Dominican Republic native worked six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out three batters and walking none. RHP Gerson Moreno came on in relief, and turned in two innings of shutout baseball, striking out a batter in his appearance. RHP Jordan Weems followed with a scoreless inning to force the game into extras. LHP Jose Ferrer (2-3, 3.23) would get tagged with the loss, and Mets RHP Grant Hartwig earned the win.
Rochester went 2-for-3 on ABS challenges, while the Mets went 2-for-4.
2B Jake Alu earned Sunday's Diamond Pro Player of the Game after going 2-for-5 with a double, single and two RBI. Alu came into the final game of the series without a hit in the last two games, snapping his hitless streak in the third inning.
After an off day on Monday, Rochester heads to Worcester for a six-game road series against the Red Sox. RHP Joan Adon is scheduled to make the start for the Wings, with LHP Brandon Walter on the bump for Worcester. First pitch is set for 6:45 pm.
