Wings Drop Series Finale, Go 4-2 on Homestand
April 16, 2023 - International League (IL)
Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Rochester Red Wings' comeback attempt fell just short Sunday afternoon as they dropped the series finale to Buffalo, 9-6.
The Wings headed into the bottom of the 3rd down 2-0 before DH Matt Adams logged an infield single to plate SS Richie Martin and bring Rochester within one. After Buffalo tacked on another three runs in the top of the 4th, the Red Wings once again responded with a run on a double play.
In the top of the 6th, Brighton-product Ernie Clement slugged a homer into the visitor's bullpen to extend the lead against his childhood team to 7-2. The Bisons would add two more to make it 9-2 heading into the bottom of the 7th.
The Wings rallied in the bottom half of the seventh thanks to an RBI single from Adams, his second RBI of the day. An RBI groundout from RF Yadiel Hernandez, and a two-run homer from LF Franklin Barreto, who now is tied with Matt Adams for the Red Wing lead with four home runs, brought the score to within three. The game would go final at that mark, making the Wings 4-2 on the homestand.
RHP Cory Abbott got the start for the Wings and was saddled with the loss, going four innings, allowing four earned on five hits while striking out five. Paul Fry earned the win for Buffalo.
The Wings' 10 hits today marked their 5th straight with 10+ knocks. Since Wednesday, no one in baseball has had more hits than the Red Wings (67).
The Wings will travel down to Norfolk to play a six-game set against Baltimore's top affiliate, starting Tuesday. RHP Tommy Romero is slated to take the mound for Rochester in the opener, first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm. Rochester-native Greg Cullen lines up for the Norfolk squad.
The Diamond Pro Player of the Game is Matt Adams, who went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored in the loss.
