CRESTWOOD - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, led early but gave up a six-run fourth inning in an 8-5 loss to the Windy City ThunderBolts on Tuesday night at Standard Bank Stadium.
The CornBelters wasted no time offensively as Ty Wiesemeyer led off the game with a triple to the left field corner and scored one batter later when K.C. Judge grounded out. The Belters added a pair of runs in the third inning when Pat Dockendorf led off with a base hit and went to third on an error on a grounder from Andrew Cohn, then scored on an infield single up the middle by Wiesemeyer. Normal made it 3-0 when Ernie Banks Jr. singled to center to drive home Cohn.
The ThunderBolts got on the board when Brandon Decker hit the first pitch of the fourth inning over the right field wall to cut the Normal lead to 3-1. A single, walk and hit batsman then loaded the bases, and a walk to Michael Torres cut the Belter lead to 3-2. Chris Wade then took an offering over the left field wall for a grand slam to give the ThunderBolts a 6-3 lead after four innings.
The Belters cut the deficit to 6-5 in the fifth inning. Wiesemeyer led off with a walk followed by a single by Steven Felix. Banks reached on a fielder's choice that retired Wiesemeyer, and Sam Judah drove home Felix with a base hit. Banks scored on a single up the middle by Trey Manz to cut the margin to 6-5 to end the scoring for the inning.
Windy City increased their lead to 7-5 when a wild pitch scored Brandon Pearl from third base with two outs in the fifth. The Bolts made it 8-5 in the seventh when Decker led off with a triple and scored on a base hit up the middle by Bob Glover.
Stephen Sauer (5-4) picked up the win while Tyler Lavigne (3-5) suffered the loss. Shane Zegarac recorded the final four outs for his seventh save.
The CornBelters conclude the road trip with a Wednesday morning game at Standard Bank Stadium. Left-hander Jacob Liedka (1-5, 4.70 ERA) is projected to start for the CornBelters against ThunderBolts righty Blayne Weller (3-0, 3.19 ERA). Pre-game from southern Cook County on WJBC.com begins at 10:20 a.m. with first pitch scheduled for 10:35.
