Too Little, Too Late for Rippers

LONDON, ONTARIO - Southern Illinois starter, Daniel Calhoun completed 7 strong innings, giving up only 5 hits, as the Miners (32-21) stopped the Rippers 6-3.

Calhoun (3-1) left the game with a 6-0 advantage, when London (20-33) put up all their runs in the 8th inning.

London earned their first run after Matt Wright singled, stole second and scored on Joash Brodin's RBI double, tightening the game to 6-1.

Jim Vahalik hit a sacrifice fly to right and scored Brodin, followed by a single from Brad Agustin to bring the game to 6-3.

The Rippers, who fall for the 4th time in a row, did have the tying run at the plate in the inning, but a strike out ended the frame.

Southern Illinois jumped on London starter, Matt Sommo (0-2) for three runs in his 3.2 innings, adding 5 hits and five walks.

Chad Maddox and Ken Gregory swatted back-to-back doubles to open the 4th inning and prop the Miners to a 2-0 lead. Will Block singled home Gregory for a 3-0 Southern Illinois lead.

The Miners put up two in the 5th on three singles and an error, taking a 5-0 advantage.

Southern Illinois' Darian Sandford started the 7th inning with a triple off Rob Cooper and scored on a sacrifice fly by the next batter, Maddox, making it 6-0.

The Rippers and Miners finish their three-game series tomorrow at 6:30pm. Brandon Sinnery (2-1 3.76) starts for London against Shawn Gilblair (6-2 3.38).
