TRAVERSE CITY,MI-The Florence Freedom(28-25) lost Tuesday night 10-2 to the Traverse City Beach Bums(36-17) to fall eight games out of first place in the Frontier League East. The crowd of 3,919 at Wuerfel Park got treated to an outstanding pitching performance from Bennett Whitmore(4-2) who tossed 7 innings of 2 run ball, while his offense had four players achieve a two RBI game.
Sean Gregory(4-4) had a rough outing for the Freedom, as he went 3.2 innings, allowing 9 hits on 8 runs(4 earned) After the game was scoreless through the first two innings, the Beach Bums attacked Gregory for 4 runs in the 3rd, and 4 runs in the 4th. Jose Vargas, Jeff Flagg, Kyle Colligan, and Sean Gusrang each collected 2 RBI's, as Gusrang homered for the second straight night.
Whitmore was in control all night long as he didn't allow a hit until Junior Arrojo's 4th inning single. Arrojo had two of the six hits for Florence. The Freedom scored their only runs of the night in the 7th as Eddie Rodriguez hit his 6th homer of the season, on a ball that just stayed fair down the left field line.
The Freedom will attempt to salvage the final game from the Beach Bums on Wednesday afternoon. Florence will send RHP Scott Moviel to the hill(0-0, 4.36) as Traverse City goes with RHP Brooks Belter(6-1, 3.16) Wednesday's game can be heard with Steve Jarnicki starting at 2:50 pm on Real Talk 1160 and realtalk1160.com.
