Joliet Slammers News Release

JOLIET SLAMMERS (23-29) vs. GATEWAY GRIZZLIES (27-25)

Tuesday, July 17 - 7:05 p.m. CT

Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL

Game #53 - Home Game #29 (23-29), (11-17)

RHP #27 Michal Perconte (0-2, 4.38 ERA) vs. RHP #16 Jonathan Gonzalez (1-2, 4.62 ERA)

Last time out.

The Slammers opened up their homestand with a 4-2 victory over the Gateway Grizzlies, and in doing do, took their fifth win in their last seven contests. Gateway struck first with run-scoring base hits from John Shelby in the fourth and Rogelio Noris in the fifth to make it 2-0. Joliet proceeded to score four unanswered runs in the win. Down a pair, Josh Lyon knocked an RBI double in the fifth to bring around Kyle Maunus all the way from first base, cutting the lead in half. Maunus provided the heroics in the seventh with a soaring solo homer to tie it, Brad Netzel laced an RBI single for the lead, and the Slammers notched an insurance run on a botched pickoff. Tommy Mendoza threw a strong six and two-thirds innings on just two runs, but Geoff Brown earned the win in relief. Mike Barsotti made his second appearance for Joliet, and Amalio Diaz got the save.

For Starters.

Michael Perconte's last start was on July 4 against the Florence Freedom as he went three innings, giving up four runs on two hits. He walked five batters and struck out two as Perconte took the loss when the Slammers fell by a score of 12-4. Perconte was an undrafted free agent out of Murray State and signed with the Chicago Cubs organization and spent 2008-2010 in the Northwest, Florida State and Midwest Leagues. He made it to class AA in 2010 and pitched in the Texas League for Astros and Rangers affiliates before joining the Gary SouthShore RailCats of the American Association earlier in 2012. The Naperville native was acquired by the Slammers on May 26, 2012 from Gary this season in exchange for Chuck Lukanen and Future Considerations. Perconte is the son of former major league player and Joliet native Jack Perconte.

Going for another series win.

The Slammers are looking to win their third straight series tonight. The last time they won three straight series was May 25-June 3 when they took back-to-back-to-back series from the Evansville Otters, Lake Erie Crushers and Washington Wild Things.

Trying to start a winning streak.

If the Slammers win tonight it would be their first winning streak of three or more games since May 29-June 2 when they won five in a row.

Some relief.

After a rough June (5.74 ERA), the Joliet bullpen has bounced back in July as they currently sport an ERA of 3.82 this month. Overall on the season the Slammers' bullpen has an ERA of 4.40, the exact same ERA their pitching staff as a whole has posted this year.

Dynamic Duo.

All-Stars Abel Nieves and Hector Pellot either hold or share the team lead in 11 major offensive categories this season. Nieves leads the team in batting average at .350, Hits (62), Home Runs (tied with Erik Lis and Kyle Maunus with four), Total Bases (86), OBP (.441), SLG (.486) and OPS (.927). Meanwhile Pellot leads the team in runs scored (40), doubles (15), walks (34), and stolen bases (9).

More walks than strike outs.

Nieves is the only Slammer with more walks (29) than strike outs (18).

Lis on fire in July.

DH and Hitting Coach Erik Lis is hitting .395 so far this July, tops on the team. Lis is still looking to find his power as his four home runs this year are well short of his 20 home run pace from last season.

Error indicator.

The Slammers are 7-23 in games when they make an error. They are 16-6 in games when they do not.

Out-hit.

When the Slammers out-hit an opponent they are 17-7, but when the opponent out-hits the Slammers Joliet has a record of 3-21.
