Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Altoona, Pa. - The Baysox scored early with two runs in the second inning and one in the third to eventually lead them to a 6-2 win over Altoona Monday. Today's victory marked the team's 50th win of the season as Bowie and Trenton each head into the All-Star break leading their respective divisions with 50 wins.
The Baysox entered today in first place in the Western Division and looking for a series split against the second place Altoona Curve. After losing the first two games of the series in Altoona, the Baysox won yesterday's game 8-2 snapping a three game losing streak.
The Baysox jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Garabez Rosa had a 2-RBI double off Altoona starter Zack Dodson that scored Quincy Latimore and Rossmel Perez. The Baysox would add on another in the top of the third when Brandon Snyder hit a two-out RBI single that scored Mike Yastrzemski to make it 3-0.
Dodson pitched six innings and allowed four runs, including a home run to Trey Mancini in the top of the sixth inning to give the Baysox a 4-0 lead. Mancini has homered in consecutive games and now has six home runs since being promoted to the Baysox.
The Curve got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning when Dan Gamache hit an RBI single to score Adam Frazier making it 4-1. The Baysox got that run back and added another in the top of the seventh inning against Altoona reliever Matt Benedict. Ozzie Martinez capped off the scoring with a 2-RBI single that scored David Freitas and Rosa, making it 6-1 Baysox.
Eastern League Player of the Month for June Terry Doyle earned his 10th win of the season. He threw 6.2 strong innings and allowed seven hits and only one unearned run lowering his ERA from 2.15 to 2.00. Doyle also struck out three and only walked one. Doyle is now 10-1 on the year and only five wins away from tying the Baysox win record of 15 held by Brad Bergesen in 2008. Tim Berry replaced Doyle with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning with a man on third and struck out Frazier to protect the Baysox 6-1 lead.
The Curve were able to get one more run back in the bottom of the eighth inning when Stetson Allie hit his 13th homerun of the year off Tim Berry. After Berry walked the following batter, Andrew Triggs came on to replace Berry with two outs and struck out three batters in the final 1.1 innings of the game.
The Baysox finish the first half of the season before the All-Star break with a record of 50-39. Today's win over the Altoona Curve gave the Baysox a two game lead over the second place Curve. The Baysox will resume after the break on Thursday, July 16th against the Harrisburg Senators for a four game home series.
