PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of July 6th through July 12th:
Erie SeaWolves second baseman Tony Thomas has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of July 6th-July 12th. The 29-year old hit .556 (10-for-18) with four doubles, one home run, six runs scored, five RBIs, two walks and a .944 slugging percentage in five games for the SeaWolves last week. Thomas, who is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, had at least one hit in all five games he played in last week and had multiple hits in three of those games, including going 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, three runs scored and two RBIs in 6-3 win at Harrisburg on Friday night. The 5'10", 180 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in batting average (.556), on-base percentage (.619), slugging percentage (.944) and OPS (1.563) last week. Tony, who is hitting .272 with six home runs, 16 RBIs and 16 runs scored in 29 games with the SeaWolves this season, was signed by the Detroit Tigers as a Minor League free agent on June 2, 2015. He was originally drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the third round of the 2007 draft out of Florida State University.
Ryan Merritt, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Akron RubberDucks, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of July 6th-July 12th. The 6'0", 170 lb. hurler started two games for the RubberDucks last week and posted a record of 1-1 with 11 strikeouts and a 3.00 ERA. Merritt, who is a native of McKinney, Texas, put his name into the Akron record books in his second appearance of the week, tossing a no-hitter in a 1-0, seven-inning win against Reading in the opening game of a doubleheader at Canal Park on Saturday night. The only baserunner in the game came on a first inning walk and Merritt struck out three batters while throwing the first no-hitter in the Eastern League this season. It was fifth no-hitter in Akron franchise history, their first since 2012. In his first start of the week Ryan gave up four runs over five innings in a 5-2 loss at Richmond on Monday night.
