Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - A pair of southpaws shut down the Winston-Salem offense as Wilmington snapped their five-game skid with a 4-2 win over the Warthogs on Friday night at Ernie Shire Field. Matt Campbell, who was making his first start since being called up from Low-A Burlington, held Winston-Salem to just two run in collecting his first win for the Blue Rocks. Reliever Gilbert De La Vara finished off Winston-Salem by tossing the final two innings for his fifth save of the season.
The Warthogs jumped on the board first as Paulo Orlando led off the first inning for Winston-Salem with a double. After moving to third on a groundout, Orlando scored on an RBI ground ball by Micah Schnurstein to give the Warthogs a 1-0 lead. The lead did not last long as Brian McFall hammered a solo homerun in the second inning to tie the game at one. Winston-Salem manufactured a run in the third inning by putting runners on the corners with two out. Aaron Cunningham was picked off first base, but induced a rundown that allowed Robert Hudson to score from third to give the Warthogs a 2-1 lead.
Wilmington tied the game in the fifth inning with a two-out rally as Marc Maddox singled and Mario Lisson lined an RBI double to tie the game at two. In the sixth inning, McFall hit another solo homerun off Ryan Rodriguez to put the Blue Rocks in front 3-2. Wilmington would add an insurance run in the ninth inning as Jose Duarte dropped a soft single into short right field with two outs to score Kiel Thibault to extend the Blue Rocks lead to 4-2.
Rodriguez (3-4) took the loss after battling thru six innings and holding the Blue Rocks to three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Campbell went seven strong innings and held Winston-Salem to two runs on three hits with five strikeouts. Brian Omogrosso shined in relief for Winston-Salem tossing two perfect innings and striking out three.
Game three of this four-game series is scheduled for Saturday, June 9 at Ernie Shore Field. The first pitch is 7 PM and the Warthogs will send RHP Kyle McCulloch (3-5, 3.88) to the mound. The Blue Rocks will counter with RHP Blake Johnson (3-4, 4.84).
