Myrtle Musings...

The Fat Lady Was Only Warming Up...Myrtle Beach trailed by three heading into the ninth inning last night but by the time the dust had settled the Birds had not only scored five times in the top of the inning to take a 10-8 lead, they had also survived four walks in the bottom of the frame to hold on for a nail-biting 10-9 victory. 1B Isaiah Ka'aihue blasted a three-run homer to tie the game, and C Jerry Verasegui then delivered a clutch double to left-center to score the deciding two runs. In the bottom of the ninth LHP Nelson Payano walked three hitters and allowed a sacrifice fly to draw Kinston within one before being replaced by LHP Kevin Gunderson. He walked the first batter he faced to load the bases, but then induced a bouncer from Chris de la Cruz that Myrtle Beach 3B Eric Campbell made a nice play on ranging to his left to record the final out. It was just the second time all year Myrtle Beach had come back to win a game when trailing after eight innings.

Long Live the (Home Run) King...Pelicans 1B Isaiah Ka'aihue not only tied the game at 8-8 with that three-run homer in the top of the ninth last night, but the blast was also his 24th in a Pelicans uniform and moved him into first place all-time in the Myrtle Beach record book. Ka'aihue had been tied at 23 with current Toledo Mud Hen Mike Hessman, who hit all 23 in 1999 (and still holds the single-season franchise mark). The home run capped off Ka'aihue's first four-hit night of the year, as he finished 4-5 with a double, the home run, three runs scored and four RBI and extended his hitting streak to a season-high seven games. He is hitting a white-hot .539 over his hitting streak, with three doubles, three home runs, eight runs scored and 13 RBI over that stretch and has also collected a hit in 12 of his last 13 games while raising his average to a season-high .282 (he was hitting .210 on May 23rd).

The Stars are Aligned...The Carolina League All-Star roster was announced and to no one's surprise RHP Moises Hernandez was named to the team to represent Myrtle Beach. Hernandez is 9-2 with a 3.09 ERA, leads the league in wins, is tied for the minor league lead in wins, is seventh in the league in ERA, and has won six straight starts.

Air Jordan...CF Jordan Schafer extended his hitting streak to six games last night with a solo home run to left-center in the third and is hitting .333 (9-27) over the streak. Schafer is now up to 83 hits on the year and stayed one ahead of Bubba Bell of the Lancaster JetHawks of the California League for the minor league lead in that category.
