Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA - Kurtis McLean broke a 2-2 deadlock just under six minutes into the third period, lifting the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to a 4-2 win over the Phantoms on Saturday night.
The Phantoms scored the game's first goal for the 10th consecutive contest when Pat Kavanagh started things off at the 6:14 mark of the first period. Ben Eager carried the puck to the bottom of the left circle before centering to Kavanagh in the slot, who beat Andy Chiodo with a wrist shot for the 1-0 lead.
Later in the period, the Penguins took full advantage of a high-sticking major called against Jim Campbell, scoring two goals to take a 2-1 lead into the intermission. The first came from Peter Taticek at 14:50, followed by the go-ahead goal from Erik Christensen at 16:15.
Philadelphia evened it up near the game's halfway point and carried the 2-2 score into the second intermission. Stefan Ruzicka faked a shot from the right circle and instead sent the puck on a rope to Tony Voce on the left post. Voce tucked it home at 10:03.
But it was McLean who found the net with the deciding goal in the third period. McLean fired home a centering pass in the low slot at 5:28. The Penguins closed out the scoring with an empty-netter from Guillaume Lefebvre with 31 seconds remaining.
The loss spoiled the professional debut of Phantoms goaltender Scott Munroe, who came to the club following his senior season at the University of Alabama at Huntsville. Munroe stopped 31 of 34 shots on the night, while Chiodo earned the win with 19 saves on 21 shots.
The Phantoms return home to host the Norfolk Admirals on Sunday at 5:05 at the Wachovia Spectrum. Tickets for the two remaining Phantoms home games are available online at www.phantomshockey.com or by phone at (215) 336-2000, (856) 338-9000 or (302) 984-2000. As always, kids tickets for all Phantoms games are just $8.00.
