Pirates announce schedule for first round of Calder Cup playoffs

PORTLAND, ME- Today the Atlantic Division Champion Portland Pirates announced the Pirates Playoff Hockey - Powered by Pepsi schedule for their first round home games of the 2006 Calder Cup playoffs. The Pirates have clinched home ice advantage in the first two rounds of the 2006 Calder Cup Playoffs and will play host to either the Providence Bruins or the Manchester Monarchs in the best-of-seven first round series of the 2006 Calder Cup Playoffs. in a best-of-seven series.

Tickets for all potential Pirates Playoff Hockey games are on sale now at Ticketmaster outlets and www.ticketmaster.com or at the Cumberland County Civic Center Box Office in person or by calling the box office at (207) 775-3458.

The 2006 Calder Cup Playoffs will begin with the Division Semi-Finals, matching the first-place team against the fourth-place team and the second-place team against the third-place team in each division. The Division Finals will match the winners of each Division Semi-Final. These series winners advance to the Conference Finals, and those series winners will meet in the Calder Cup Finals. All series are a best-of-seven format.

Currently, the Providence Bruins occupy the fourth spot in the Atlantic Division with 86 points, trailing the third place Manchester Monarchs (87 points) in the Atlantic Division standings.

The Pirates could host the first three rounds of the 2006 Calder Cup Playoffs, depending on how the Pirates and Wilkes-Barre Penguins finish the season. Currently, the Pirates have the lead in the Eastern Conference race. Portland (49-18-5-3) is tied with Wilkes-Barre (48-18-5-5) atop the Eastern Conference at 106 points, but the Pirates have one game in hand and can clinch home ice in the third round with four more victories.

If the Pirates meet the Bruins in the first round of the playoffs, the Pirates will have home advantage in the best-of-seven Division Semi-Finals series at the Cumberland County Civic Center starting on Thursday, April 20.
